Does It Hurt?
I like to say treatment is “sensational!” You may feel a slight
sensation when the needles are inserted, which is variously described as
an ache, twinge, slight sting or tingle. It is usually fleeting.
Acupuncture needles are thin, about the thickness of one or two human
hairs, and solid stainless steel, so that insertion is hardly felt.
Could the needles transfer illness to me from another person?
No. Acupuncture needles used by most acupuncturists in this country are
pre-sterilized, packaged, and used once, on you, then thrown in a
contaminated waste container and disposed of by a medical waste company.
They have not touched another human being between sterilization and you.
Should I tell my doctor?
By all means tell your doctor that you are in acupuncture treatment.
Today, most doctors recognize the potential benefits of acupuncture and
are aware their patients are seeking complementary therapies.
Acupuncture does not interfere with your regular medical care and you
should definitely continue all medications and appointments until both
you and your doctor agree they are no longer necessary.
How long will I be in treatment?
Acupuncture is a practice that, if continued throughout your life, can
help to prevent illness and maintain the degree of wellness you have
attained during the earlier, more frequent, phase. It will not be
necessary to continue to come often, but periodic treatment will be of
great value to your health. You may start to see changes and
improvements after a very short time, or it may take longer; however, it
is important to continue regular treatment until we are sure that the
changes have taken hold and are being supported by your own healthy
choices and behaviors.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
More and more insurance companies are covering acupuncture treatment.
You should discuss this with your provider, or read over your policy
provisions, and see if yours is one of them. As a licensed health care
provider, my services should be covered in some form if acupuncture is a
covered benefit under your policy. I will be happy to discuss this
further with you if you call my office.
Are there any side effects of acupuncture?
There are no known side effects of acupuncture. However, you may
experience a “healing reaction” which means that old symptoms may return
briefly as your body throws off the remnants of them.
I’d like to start! What is my next step?
That’s terrific! Just call the number the below and leave a message for
me. I will return your call at my earliest opportunity and we can set up
a time for your Traditional Diagnosis. I look forward to hearing from
you!
